Tarring and Backfill Operatives (Driver – Labourers) Reinstatement Advert

Lightways (Contractors) Limited is a family run business with over 40 years of experience in streetlighting, surfacing, and reinstatement. Our reinstatement division delivers a surfacing and reinstatement service to local authorities, public utilities, and public utility contractors.

We reinstate carriageways and footways of all surface types, including asphalt, bitmac, slabs, block paving, setts, and granolithic concrete. All our works are carried out by our own trained and qualified staff, and we would like you to join them.

To meet the demands of our customers, we are recruiting Tarring and Backfill Operatives (Driver/Labourers). You will work in small crews, backfilling and compacting excavations after utility works, then laying and finishing the tarmac so the road or footway is put back to standard. We are recruiting in all three of our areas: our Head Office in Larbert, Falkirk, our depot in Mayfield, Midlothian, and Dumfries & Galloway. Works are carried out at sites across Scotland.

Duties

• Backfill excavations in layers using approved materials, compacting each layer with plate compactors, trench rammers and rollers
• Lay, rake and roll hot tarmac by hand on carriageways and footways
• Cut, break out and trim existing surfaces to prepare for permanent reinstatement
• Seal joints and finish each reinstatement neatly to the required specification
• Drive company vehicles to and between sites, transporting crew, materials and small plant
• Set out and maintain signs, barriers and guarding around the works
• Carry out daily vehicle and plant checks, and record and report any defects
• Record driver hours and complete job sheets and photographs accurately
• Attend project and work briefings as required
• Follow Lightways’ Health & Safety Policy to keep yourself, others, and the working environment safe

Schedule

The working hours for these roles are nine hours per day, Monday to Friday. Overtime, including weekends, is available as required.

The Ideal Candidates

Essential criteria

• Full driving licence, with at least one year of driving experience
• Experience of tarring and backfilling, ideally in utility reinstatement or roadworks
• Comfortable with physical, outdoor work in all weathers
• Self-motivated and reliable
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills

Desirable criteria

• NRSWA street works operative card (excavation, backfill and compaction, and bituminous reinstatement units)
• C1 driving licence (vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes)
• CSCS card
• Experience operating small plant such as rollers and dumpers
• Traffic management experience
