Erskine Bridge Lighting and Electrical Refurbishment

Case Study

Delivering Scotland's Largest Bridge Lighting Refurbishment Ahead of Schedule

Awarded by Transport Scotland in March 2016, the Erskine Bridge Lighting and Electrical Refurbishment Contract represented one of Scotland's most significant infrastructure upgrades – a £3.23 million comprehensive refurbishment of the 40-year-old lighting and electrical network spanning this critical A898 River Clyde crossing. With Scotland Transerv acting as Engineer and Clayton-Fourie Consultancy providing design services, Lightways Contractors served as Principal Contractor, demonstrating our capability to deliver complex, high-value projects within demanding operational constraints whilst maintaining traffic flow for 42,000 daily vehicle movements.

Project Scope & Technical Complexity

The 22-week contract encompassed comprehensive external and internal refurbishment across the entire bridge structure. External works included replacement and upgrading of road lighting installations on both bridge approaches, deck-mounted lighting systems, high mast luminaire replacement with associated electrical network upgrades, and installation of intelligent road lighting management systems. Critically, all external works required night-time execution to maintain daytime traffic flow across this vital transport link.

Internal works within the bridge’s box girder structure demanded specialist ATEX Category 2 approved electrical systems suitable for potentially explosive atmospheres. Our scope included removal of six 100mm steel cable conduit pipes, installation of 300mm heavy gauge post-galvanised ladder rack systems, supply and installation of 679 ATEX Cat 2 LED luminaires with integral emergency lighting backup, and installation of 17 internal lighting distribution boards plus 17 street lighting distribution boards.

Phase One: Approach Roads & High Mast Lighting

Commencing 30th May 2016, Phase One targeted the North and South bridge approaches, improving lighting levels whilst dramatically reducing energy consumption. Our teams installed 56 Mallatite aluminium columns with TRT Lighting Aspect LED lanterns on the A898 South approach, plus 12 columns within the Administration Building compound, complete with trenching, ducting, and electrical supply cabling. On the North approach, we replaced 128 high mast luminaires with LED technology and completely renewed the high mast cable network. Despite the technical complexity and operational challenges of working on a multi-span cable-stayed bridge spanning the River Clyde, Forth and Clyde Canal, and North Clyde railway line, Lightways completed Phase One in just 17 nights. Through effective traffic management provided by specialist partner Contraflow Ltd, we maintained one operational lane in each direction throughout, ensuring minimal disruption to the thousands of daily commuters relying on this crucial crossing.

Phase Two: Bridge Deck Refurbishment

Phase Two focused on replacing twin-armed columns mounted on the bridge deck whilst upgrading all existing lanterns to LED technology. Working with Mallatite to manufacture bespoke flange-plated columns designed to utilise existing deck foundations, we eliminated costly and time-consuming foundation replacement works. This innovative approach enabled completion of 27 column replacements in just five nights during August 2016, with a further nine replacements achieved in a single night during October. At the summit of both 40-metre towers, we replaced aircraft obstruction lights and associated cabling with new LED units. Originally scheduled across two daylight weekends to comply with aviation safety requirements, our teams completed this challenging work in just one weekend, substantially reducing disruption to the travelling public.
